Four years ago Daren Howarth and Adi Nortje moved from Brighton to Brittany to take on a huge life experiment. Their plan was to build an earth-sheltered home almost entirely from recycled materials, and to live the most sustainable lifestyle as possible. Based on ideas pioneered in the 1970s in New Mexico, their main building blocks were old tyres packed with rammed earth. But this very low tech house required lots of low tech energy to build it.
